Let's get personal.
My friend Jack got a personalized name book for his fourth birthday.
It was one that turned his name into an acronym, so he could learn how to spell his name.
He now looks back at it with some nostalgia. But, he admits that he never really read it.
Instead, he loved to read the book ”Jack and the Beanstock”
- because his family had a bean garden outside.
And the main character's name was Jack.
Out of the two stories, the one he read was the one that actually related to his life.
I also had a few classmates whose parents were ”well off” and
could afford personalized books for their kids.
We were all so envious of their ”personalized books”.
And they used it to ”show off how much their parents loved them, and how special they were”.
But they never read the books.
They were just trophies, sitting on shelves, collecting dust.
Only pulled out to ”show off” how much their parents cared and ours didn't.
Again, the books they read on their own were books with actual plots that related to their lives.
Because children look to stories that they can relate to.
Whether it has directly to do with their own life,
or a fantasy of theirs.
The story has to relate to them.
